What information carries forward from note to note?
The following information will carry forward from one note to another in ICANotes.
As a general rule of thumb, look to the bottom of each note type to view the Key designating how color-coded fields behave within notes:
If a second Complete Evaluation is done on a patient, all information from the Past Psych History, Medical History, Social History, Developmental History and Family History will carry forward by default. The clinician can always delete old information or create an addendum to update a specific history field.
From Progress Note to Progress Note, the following information is carried forward by default:
- Access to Past, Family, Social History may be both viewed and edited from inside today's progress note.
- The clinician can choose if he or she wants the Medical History to show in today's compiled note.
- The clinician can choose if he or she wants Notes/Risk Factors to show in today's note. This field is easily updated by clinician and available for all members of the group to view when documenting on a specific patient.
- Diagnoses will always push into a new note. By the way, diagnoses may be changed by updating the status field.
- Current, active medications (entered in our medication field) will always push forward into a new note.
"Clicking our buttons will ensure that certain data will push forward into the next note."
Customizing the information that carries forward from note to note:
1. You can customize what carries from note to note in the settings.
2. Go to the Options tab and look for the area circled red in the screenshot below.
You can choose whether to include:
- Medical History
- Notes/Risk Factors
- Diagnoses
- Medications
3. Within each progress note, you also can control what information you would like to be on the report. Look for the radio buttons under the section. Note: If you have changed your settings in Settings + Directories, the radio buttons will already be populated with your choices from there.
Examples:

4. If you would like to only show your content from a complete assessment, ask a security administrator (or group owner) to contact ICANotes support to have them turn on the "Keep CE Content per User" group rule. Once activated, only the content you put in each patient's complete assessment will be brought forward to subsequent complete assessments.
