How to Prescribe a Medication

How to Prescribe a Medication

Overview

This article provides instructions on prescribing medications for clients.

You can prescribe a medication directly from the progress note created for the client. Once prescribed, the medication appears in the Medications box on the progress note. When you compile the note, the medication is also included in the compiled note.

Note:

  • Medications in the Medications box: Only medications prescribed or discontinued within a specific note are displayed in the Medications box for that note.
  • Medications in the compiled note: The compiled note includes all active medications for the client. However, the Medications box only lists medications prescribed from the specific note.

Prescribing a Medication

Navigate to client's chart and create a progress note. Within the PN, Part 2 tab on the Progress Note, locate the Medication box as highlighted in the screen below:

Note: The Medication box is visible only to users with access to the eRx feature.

In the Medication box, you can view prescribed medications and allergies recorded for the client.

To prescribe a medication, click the Enter button. This opens the Medication List tab, which displays a list of all medications prescribed for the client.

To prescribe a new medication, click the Manage Medication(s) button.

There are two ways you can add a medication to the list.

Option 1: Start by typing medication name in the Prescribe New Drug field as shown below.

Option 2: Click the Prescribe New Drug button. It opens a list of categories to select the appropriate medication.

In the example below, the Cardiac category is selected that displays all the medications belong to that category. Select the one from the list.

On selecting the medication, the Dosage box appears as shown below. Select an appropriate dosage from the list.

After you select the dosage, the Prescription Preview screen appears to enter further details such as quantity, directions, duration, refill, days supply, pharmacy, and so forth.

Select the required details and click the Send to Pharmacy button.

The Prescription Detail screen appears as shown below. Review the details and click Approve and Send.

Note: Click the info icons on this screen to view details about the respective field.

The prescribed medication appears on the screen as depicted below.
