This Knowledge Base article will guide PC/Windows users on how to take a screenshot of their ICANotes program using keyboard shortcuts and the Windows snipping tool. This may be useful in situations where you have a question or issue to report to our Support department, and wish to include a screenshot of said question/issue.

Print Screen button

On your computer keyboard you may see a button labelled Print Screen/Print SCRN

When used, your computer system will take a screenshot of the entirety of your screen. Just make certain you have your ICANotes session viewable before you press the key. The image will be temporarily saved to your computer’s internal keyboard. You can paste the image into email, a Word or Google document, or other similar programs.

Please note: only one screenshot can be copied and pasted at a time when using the Print Screen button. If you need to take multiple screenshots, you’ll use the Print Screen button, paste the image into a document, then return to ICANotes and repeat the process.

You can instead take a screenshot of just one specific window displayed on your screen. This may be helpful for those who use ICANotes in windowed mode, meaning the ICANotes window is not opened in full screen but is visible with other open programs. Make certain the window is selected and active by clicking on the title bar. For RDP/desktop users, this is the very top bar where you see: username – internet.icanotes.com – Remote Desktop Connection

For TSPlus users, make certain your browser window is the active window on-screen. With the window active, press and hold the keyboard combination Alt + Print SCRN.

A screenshot of just that active window will be available to paste into an image or text editor (such as Word) or email program. Like with the Print Screen button information above, only one screenshot may be taken and pasted at a time. If multiple screenshots are needed, repeat the process.

If you’re using a PC-based laptop (as opposed to a desktop/tower) you may need to also use the Function (or Fn) button in conjunction with these keyboard shortcuts. This will vary depending on your equipment.

The Snipping Tool/Snip & Sketch

If using Windows 10 on your PC, you should have access to the Snip & Sketch/Snipping Tool. This is a screen-capturing program from Microsoft that likely came pre-installed with your operating system. Please note: Windows indicates that in a future update, the Snipping Tool will be moving to a new home in Snip & Sketch. You may have one or both programs on your Windows computer.

Locate the Snipping Tool in the Start menu. You can find the updated version, Snip & Sketch:

Alternately, you can find the Snipping Tool by using the menu’s search functionality (via the search button, or by typing the name of the program into the Start menu):

Snip & Sketch

Click the New button and choose an option to Snip now, Snip in 3 seconds, or Snip in 10 seconds.

Once you’ve made your choice, your screen will gray out and a menu will appear at the top center of the screen. Use the available options in the menu at the top center of your screen to make a rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full screen snip. Otherwise click the X to cancel.

Click and drag your mouse over the area of your screen you wish to capture. When you release your mouse, the Snip & Sketch tool will appear on-screen with the captured image. Use the available options to markup the image with a pen and highlighter, or click to save the image to your computer. Once saved, the file can be sent to ICANotes via email.

Snipping Tool

You can take a quick screenshot of any portion of your screen using the Snipping Tool. Simply click the New button to start capturing. Your cursor will change to cross-hairs, at which point you’ll click to drag the area of the screen you wish to capture.

Once the area is captured, release your mouse and the Snipping Tool will reappear with your screenshot.

With the screenshot now in the Snipping Tool, you can mark it up with the pen and highlighter tools or copy it to your computer’s clipboard to paste into a document or email. Use the File menu to save the image, if desired. Clicking New again will take you through the same process, replacing the previously captured screenshot.
